The Yamaha R1 is without doubt the most dangerous bike I have ever had the misfortune to test. If anything, read this bit…anyone can pull open the throttle, but it takes an expert to ride the darn thing. This bike is screaming for a rider that can not only be skilful, but also fully professional. I had always had a fear of the 350 YPVS power valve system in years gone by, but this monster of a bike certainly buried that. The acceleration, power and handling are simply awesome although I can imagine that the riding position would be uncomfortable in a long haul trip. To cancel that out, you would probably arrive there earlier anyway, so what the hell. The bike is not what I would call “passenger friendly”, so if your woman is over 11 stones, then you will either have to opt for a new bike, or change the woman – obviously, change the woman. This bike is an eye-puller. People, young and old simply cannot keep their eyes off the mechanical monster. It is simply aggressive and like I said in the start of the review, not for the novice or local “Ring `o’ Bells head banger.
On the plus side, a powerful machine, plenty of low-end/high-end power, 6 smooth gears and good visibility through the shield. The fairing is designed for you to be comfortable at around 180mph (you know, peanut for a brain down the high street tactic) and a bright red hugger protects the whole machine. This is one of the best bikes in the shop but it scares the shit out of me. If you know motorcycles and are experienced enough, then this is the bike for you.
